The Alameda County Postpartum Experience

Alameda County is the most diverse county in California, and that diversity shows up in every dimension of how families experience the postpartum window. We serve queer families in Oakland and Berkeley, multigenerational households in Fremont, single parents by choice across the county, immigrant families from East and South Asia, Latin America, and East Africa, and tech-employed families combining Maven and Carrot benefits to fund overnight care. Our doula network reflects that diversity — by language, by training, by lived experience.

The county also spans dramatically different geographies. Berkeley and Oakland are urban, walkable, with strong neighborhood identities and a deep history of progressive parent communities. The I-880 corridor cities — Alameda, San Leandro, Hayward, Castro Valley — blend suburban stability with growing diversity. Fremont and Newark anchor the southern county with strong public schools and a large South Asian community. The Tri-Valley (which is also part of Alameda County) brings established suburbs and major employer footprints. We have doulas embedded in each of these communities.

What's Included in Our Postpartum Doula Care

Every shift includes infant care (feeding, burping, diapering, soothing, swaddling), breastfeeding and lactation support, bottle-feeding support, newborn observation, sleep hygiene coaching, sibling support, light meal preparation, light tidying of baby spaces, emotional support and listening, and referrals to IBCLCs, pelvic floor PT, and perinatal mental health providers when needed.

We don't diagnose, prescribe, or replace your medical team. We complement your pediatrician, midwife, and OB with practical day-to-day support.

Alameda County Pricing & Investment

Alameda County rates typically run $45-$65/hour daytime and $50-$75/hour overnight. Common packages:

  • Light daytime: 3 shifts/week for 4 weeks — $2,000-$4,500
  • Overnight reset: 3 overnights/week for 6-8 weeks — $5,000-$9,000
  • Comprehensive: day + overnight for 8-12 weeks — $10,000-$18,000
  • Live-in: 2-4 weeks continuous — $8,000-$20,000

Carrot, Maven, and Progyny benefits plus HSA/FSA dollars can substantially offset these costs. We'll help you understand what your plan covers and connect you with a doula who works with it.
