Postpartum Doulas on the Peninsula

In-home day and night support from South San Francisco through Menlo Park and Half Moon Bay

Postpartum Doula Care on the Peninsula

The San Francisco Peninsula stretches from the southern edge of the city through tech-centered suburbs to Half Moon Bay's coastal communities. Peninsula families balance demanding careers, growing families, and often grandparents far from home. Our postpartum doulas have been supporting Peninsula families since 2001 — providing the in-home daily care that lets new parents actually rest, recover, and bond with their baby.

We serve families throughout San Mateo, Burlingame, Hillsborough, Redwood City, Menlo Park, Atherton, Foster City, and the surrounding communities. Whether you're coming home from Stanford, Sequoia, or Mills-Peninsula, we coordinate the transition and make the first weeks at home feel manageable.

The Peninsula Postpartum Experience

Peninsula families occupy a unique middle ground in the Bay Area — neither the urban density of San Francisco nor the suburban sprawl of the South Bay. The Peninsula has its own rhythm: established neighborhoods like Burlingame and Hillsborough where families settle for the schools, the biotech corridor running from South San Francisco through Foster City and into Brisbane, and the academic-medical ecosystem anchored by Stanford. Most Peninsula clients are first-time parents in their early-to-mid 30s, often building careers at Genentech, Visa, Stanford Health, Oracle, or Salesforce, with partners returning to work within 6-16 weeks.

Our Peninsula doulas understand the specific stressors here: the commute up or down the 101/280 corridors, the cultural mix of long-established California families and recent transplants from the East Coast or abroad, the higher proportion of biotech and academic parents who want evidence-based guidance, and the reality that grandparents are often a 5-hour flight away (or longer). We've supported many families discharging from Stanford and Sequoia, including NICU graduates and families with high-risk medical histories.

The Peninsula's cultural diversity also shapes how we deliver care. Our doulas have supported Chinese confinement traditions in Hillsborough, Indian jaappa periods in Foster City, Mexican cuarentena in San Mateo, and observant Jewish and Muslim postpartum practices throughout the region. We adapt our care to fit your family's traditions and preferences — let us know when you reach out and we'll match accordingly.

Daytime, Overnight, and Live-In Support on the Peninsula

Daytime Postpartum Doula Support

4-6 hour shifts, 2-5 days per week. Ideal for Peninsula families where a partner returns to the Stanford campus, biotech labs in South San Francisco, or office tower jobs in San Mateo. The at-home parent gets hands-on help with breastfeeding, infant care while they nap or shower, sibling support, light meal prep, and a knowledgeable second set of hands during the day.

Overnight Postpartum Doula Support

8-10 hour overnight shifts, 1-7 nights per week. The most-requested service on the Peninsula because both parents in dual-career households often return to demanding roles within weeks. The doula handles overnight feeds, diaper changes, and sleep cycles while parents get 6+ uninterrupted hours of sleep. Two to three overnights per week is the most common configuration we see for Peninsula families.

Live-In Postpartum Doula Support

Multi-day or multi-week continuous care. Common scenarios on the Peninsula: family-of-origin can't travel, both parents return to work quickly, twins or NICU graduates, or specific medical needs that warrant extra attention. Many Peninsula clients use live-in for the first 2 weeks then transition to overnights.

What's Included in Our Postpartum Doula Care

Every shift includes infant care (feeding, burping, diapering, soothing, swaddling), breastfeeding and lactation support, bottle-feeding support (paced feeding, formula/expressed milk handling), newborn observation (color, breathing, output, hydration, when to call your pediatrician), sleep hygiene for parents (protected nap windows, sleep banking, partner shift planning), sibling support, light meal preparation, light tidying of baby spaces, emotional support and listening, and referrals to IBCLCs, pelvic floor PT, perinatal mental health providers when needed.

We do not diagnose medical conditions, prescribe medications, or replace your pediatrician, midwife, or OB. We're a complement to your medical team focused on practical day-to-day care.

Peninsula Pricing & Investment

Postpartum doula rates on the Peninsula typically run $45-$65/hour daytime and $50-$75/hour overnight, depending on the doula's certification, experience, and specialty training. Common Peninsula support packages:

  • Light daytime: 2-3 shifts/week for 4 weeks — $2,000-$4,500
  • Overnight reset: 3 overnights/week for 6-8 weeks — $5,000-$9,000
  • Comprehensive: day + overnight combo for 8-12 weeks — $10,000-$18,000
  • Live-in: 2-4 weeks continuous — $8,000-$20,000

With Carrot, Maven, or Progyny through Stanford, Genentech, Visa, Oracle, or Salesforce, families commonly offset $5,000-$15,000 of these costs. We can help you calculate your exact coverage before committing.
